Competition For People Within The Criminal Justice System
Koestler runs an annual art competition for people within the criminal justice system, receiving over 3000 entries from all over the country. Categories include photography, painting, script writing and life autobiography.
What?
Antigone gave Koestler a multi-year grant to contribute towards running costs of the organisation and to create an award for writing life autobiography.
Why?
This is an established charity that is in an exciting phase of development under the new directorship of Tim Robertson. We are excited by his priority to get more art from prisoners into the public eye, and helping young offenders - often on shorter sentences - get more involved in the art competition.
Outcomes?
We will be looking at the impact of Koestler's work through participation of offenders in the scheme, including young offenders, and on the involvement of the public in exhibitions and in Koestler's work.
In 2008, an exhibition of entries from institutions all around the country was put on at the South Bank Centre. Over 10,000 people visited.
